Don’t Take Anything Personally

Don’t Make Assumptions

Always Do Your Best

These are the four agreements as written about in the book by Don Miguel Ruiz. I have never read the book but because I believe so strongly in synchronistic events (3 times has meaning), I will share my thoughts about the four agreements.

Why haven’t I read the book? I’ve picked it up numerous times. Thumbed through it. Sounds like I’m being told what to do. That doesn’t work for me. Maybe the timing wasn’t right, but here it is in my face again. I’ve been bombarded with these sayings over and over again, from so many different directions.

I do live my life this way. Maybe not what is described in the book, I don’t know because I haven’t read it. But the statements are strong. Very strong. Very courageous. Empowering.

For me, the four agreements, or statements, are all kind of Buddhist in nature. Just let life flow. Mindfulness. Be aware of the present moment. Isn’t that all we really have? Past is gone, future may never be.

Be Impeccable With Your Word.

Let’s admit it, we are all human. Our tendency is to re-act (to play back a situation, to take action). Let’s learn to step back, pause, breath… and take our time before speaking. Speak from the heart, not from emotion. Maybe this needs a little clarification. The heart is who we are, our higher self. Emotion is the ego screaming…”Listen to me!!!”. Before I speak, I go over it in my head, write it down if I need to, and ponder the question “Is this from a place of love? What would love say?” Take the time. Let love speak. And again by love I mean; our authentic self, our light shining outward (and whatever works… Spirit, Creator, God, Universe).

Don’t Take Anything Personally.

We are all individuals. Just as snowflakes, none of us are the same. At any given moment we are different from the moment we were before. Everyone has the right to be who they are, at any given moment. What we feel one moment may not be our “truth” the next. We are in a different space. Every moment we are different. The best we can do is to be ourselves. To be impeccable in our word, in the moment. This is not to say we are not responsible for our actions. Our actions will cause reactions or responses in others. This is the “butterfly principle” or “the ripple effect”. Everything we do or say or think is energy and shifts energy elsewhere. So when someone responds.. .step back, breath, think about your words… and then respond, not react. Don’t take it personally, let the other person be who they are.

Don’t Make Assumptions.

Because each one of these builds on the other, I think it’s getting easier to share my feelings on each. Assumptions or expectations are the fast-track to disappointment. We are individuals, right? To assume that someone else will react or respond in a certain way that pleases us… is like walking into a sandtrap. We find ourself sinking slowly into into the abyss. Let go. Enjoy the moment.

“As soon as we attempt to label or define (change or control) something, we take away from the beauty and mystery that first attracted us.”

Always Do Your Best.

That’s really all we have to strive for… to be our best. We don’t have to be better than anyone else. Remember the snowflake? We are all part of the whole. Whatever, whoever we are, adds to the whole. If we think about the other previous three “agreements”, this one falls into place. Let go of judgment about yourself. We are all human. Forgive yourself. Do your best in the present moment.

And….

Here’s my Fifth Agreement…

Always Be True To Yourself.

We live in society, community, so we do have personal responsibilities. But, the most important thing is to be true to yourself. If you are not true to yourself, no one else will be either. Stand proud and walk your path. If you are not hurting yourself or anyone else… being true to yourself and walking your path is freedom. Isn’t that what life is about?

“Nothing before, nothing behind; the steps of faith fall on the seeming void and find the rock beneath” ~John Greenleaf Whittier

There is a space. A space left vacant when we change, change any part of our self. It won’t stay empty for long, as this is the portal through which the new arrives. So much is changing now, individually and collectively. We are on the threshold of what some are referring to as The New World. When we change collectively, change occurs exponentially, faster. Time gives the appearance of speeding up. Once change is initiated, either consciously or not, there is no stopping it. Energy has been put into motion.

After change, there is a period of settling in, percolating, integrating the shift in energy, much like water that has been stirred up. Beliefs and ideals that were once held as truths are being questioned and released. What no longer works or is not in alignment with who we are is being left behind. Many lives are being simplified and minimalized. A sense of lightness, wholeness, authenticity fills our being. Which brings us to the void, the space ready to be filled with the new. The more change, the bigger the void. Feelings of uncertainty, loss of direction, lack of motivation and maybe even overwhelm. Just as trees release their leaves in the fall and stand barren throughout the winter, we should use this time to rest and regroup before moving forward. Grounding, drawing our energies into building a solid foundation, like roots. When the time is right, doors will open, synchronicities and messages will guide and life will flow again.

“When you have come to the edge of all the light you have and step into the darkness of the unknown believe that one of the two will happen to you, either you’ll find something solid to stand on or you’ll be taught how to fly!” ~Richard Bach

This morning, like any other morning, I pulled my oracle card for the day. A message or theme for my day. Death. I have no fear associated with the Death card; it symbolizes transformation, letting go of the outworn and newness.

Every moment we are dying and being reborn. The cells in our body being replaced, thoughts and ideas changing and energy shifting. You are not the same now as you were when you started reading this post. If we are open, our perspective on life constantly changes.

Life is change.

Taking the First Step

An interesting email just arrived in my inbox from The Wake Up Cloud with a guest post by Srinivas Rao of The Skool of Life. Although the post is on the topic of creating an online business, he discusses the importance of taking the first step to realizing dreams and goals.

In the simplest context of physical reality if you take a step in a direction, you’ll no longer be standing in the place you were at before.

If you keep moving in a different direction then you will end up somewhere other than where you started. Sometimes you have to stop thinking and take the first step even when you can’t see more than one step ahead.

How Possibilities Open Up

Let’s say that you are taking a walk and you’re going in a straight line (which by the way is not necessary to see what I’m talking about).

When you get to a different point on the line, you’ll be looking at the same place from a different perspective. You’ll see things you couldn’t see before. It’s not that they weren’t there, but because of where you stood you couldn’t see them.

Consider this in the context of a goal or dream. After you take the first step, you’ll be looking at the same situation from a different perspective. All of a sudden possibilities that didn’t exist before will open up.

You’ll see things you wouldn’t have seen without taking the first step. If you keep moving, possibilities and opportunities will continue to open up.

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when focused too much on the big picture or goal. Be in the present. Take that first baby step and feel your energy shift and perspective change. Embrace change, allow possibilities.

It does work.

Wow, since the beginning of the new year, media sources are having a field day with promoting fear and crushing our positive and optimistic outlook. Don’t get trapped and feed into it! Actually, that’s what media always does. How rarely do we hear uplifting news? Yes, there have been numerous instances to challenge our faith, trust and optimism, I won’t deny that. It can appear as though change is taking a ride on an out of control freight train. We can all play a part of throwing the switch and changing tracks.

The Tipping Point

Everything is made up of energy, that’s a proven fact. Even our emotions. That is one thing we do have control of; our emotions. (Don’t worry, this is not another blog post about the Law of Attraction).

This piece from an article by Ernesto Ortiz is amazing and only one example of the power of emotions:

“Extensive research has been conducted by the Heart Math Institute in northern California. The whole purpose of the Heart Math Institute is the research of the human heart in ways that far exceed the physical functions of the heart. There scientists and researchers have found out that the layers of the Earth’s atmosphere generate a field of energy that they call “A Symphony of Frequencies” and some of these frequencies are on the same range of the human heart and the human brain. What that means is that when we create an experience that it has an emotional component we are at the same time linking with these fields. The beauty of this is that these influences can be measured.

So this is the way they find this out: we have some satellites orbiting around the earth, giving us information every 30 minutes. There are in fact two of them, one above the northern hemisphere and the one at the opposite end of the southern hemisphere. The name of these satellites is GCMS Global Coherence Monitoring System and their function is to measure the magnetic fields of the earth. Each of these measure independently and their charted frequencies is never identical; however back in September 2001 both satellites started giving the same reading on their charts. The specific date that I am talking about is September 11, 2001 and 15 minutes after the first plane hit the twin towers in New York, scientists were able to overlay the data to find out that the human emotion experienced by the attack impacted the magnetic Fields of the earth.

If September 11 was not sufficient proof of this impact, a few years later the same thing happened in quite a different way. On September 11 the measurement of the charts skyrocketed; on the second event the charts went all the way down to still point. I wonder if you’re guessing you what the second event was? If you guessed the inauguration of President Obama, you are right; the whole world was glued to their televisions holding their breath as this man took the oath of office to the presidency of the United States.

Two very opposite incidents: one filled with violence that shocked the world, and the other with the hope of peace, the end the conflicts and of a better world. The scientists connected to the Heart Math Institute came with a hypothesis and it is “stronger collective emotion has some measurable impact on the magnetic fields of the earth”.

(For more on the work of the Institute of HeartMath)

Fear is behind all the challenges making themselves known. Society is reacting instead of responding. Media is causing the fear. And with the social networks such as Facebook and Twitter, we are able to spread fear like an epidemic or wildfire. Dialing into these fears, we are losing our sanity and fostering dis-ease. It’s becoming all too evident. (The National Wildlife Health Center database documents that birds die all the time in large quantities).

If collectively we are powerful enough to change the magnetic field of the earth, just image what we can accomplish if we stay positive and optimistic.

Each one of us can make a difference. Let’s all work on creating that tipping point and switching tracks. The only choice we really have in life is how we look at it.

Some time ago I wrote a post, How to Find Your Life Purpose, which has turned out to be one of my more popular posts. Since that time I have come across numerous other articles on how to find your life purpose, making money doing what you love, discovering your passion in life, etc. This is an update to my original post because discovering and living our life purpose will always be a topic that deserves attention.

As Henri Junttila of The Wake Up Cloud states:

The real secret to finding your passion isn’t about identifying some huge goal or undertaking. It is about following your excitement and doing what makes you happy.

Henri has put together a great series of articles (also available as a free eBook), “How to Find Your Life’s Passion in 5 Days or Less“. He covers 4 common fears that prevent us from finding or living our dream life, how to find our passion in 20 min. or less, and taking action.

Arvind of Make it Happen just recently had a guest post by Satya Colombo titled: 9 Powerful Steps to Get Whatever You Want in Life. The first step is Know Your Passion-Driven Life Purpose. Satya offers a free tool that allows you to discover your passionate life purpose.

If you are looking for another approach, nationally known intuitive and spiritual leader Sonia Choquette’s book Your Heart’s Desire: Instructions for Creating the Life You Really Want details the nine universal principles for creating the reality of your dreams. Sonia’s book is filled with exercises, pertinent real life stories and sage advice.

Finding and living your life purpose will not happen by itself. You need to take the first step. Take that leap of faith.

…this could show him what’s important in a lifetime! You find what you love and you learn everything about it. You bet your life on what you know and you run from safety, off your mountain into the air, trusting the Principle of Flight to bring you soaring up on lift you cannot see with your eyes.” ~Richard Bach, ‘Running From Safety’

There are no more excuses. Take some action towards living the life of your dreams.

The fall and winter seasons are a perfect time for inner reflection. Recently I posted an article on How to and Why Keep a Spiritual Journal. Here is a great article on keeping a Personal Growth Journal written by Jack Canfield.

Use A Journal to Inspire Yourself into Action

by Jack Canfield

By keeping a personal journal, you enter a sacred space. Here, you are safe from judgment and free from daily duties and cares. Here you can dream, discover, and dare to create new ways of being in the world.

Use a journal to directly reinforce the teachings of The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be, and other personal learning courses. Create a laboratory for personal transformation as you put the principles of your course into action each day. Do this by including sections in your journal for inspiration, intention, action, and growth.

Receive Inspiration

Writing captures guidance from your deepest self before it disappears. Inspired ideas can rise to the surface of your mind in a classic “aha!” moment. This might be a solution to a persistent problem, an idea for a breakthrough goal, a powerful image, an energizing affirmation, or another sudden spark of insight. No matter what form the inspiration takes, record it in your journal.

Write about your challenges as well. Note the moments when you are not functioning at your peak—times when you feel bored, tense, angry, afraid, or sad. These feelings are clues to areas of your life ripe for transformation. In your journal, describe the discomfort in detail and how you reacted. Look for patterns. Also brainstorm new options for responding. Sometimes a moment of inspiration lies just on the other side of a tough emotion.

Form Intention

Statements of intention contain blueprints for action. This kind of journal entry offers a way to stay positive and on course, directed toward the new results you want to attract into your life.

As with writing affirmations, keep intention statements focused on what you want. “I intend to effortlessly double my income” is more effective than “I intend to stop worrying about paying my bills each month.”

Also release the word try. A statement such as “I will try to save at least 10 percent of my income each month” conveys something less than wholehearted commitment. People who continue to overspend can rationalize the result by saying, “Well, I am trying.”

A more effective option comes from Yoda, the gnomish guru in the Star Wars film trilogy: “Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.”

While you can fill up a journal with statements of inspiration and intention, consider adding inducements to action as well. Even the most jaw-dropping insight or motivating statement of intention can fall flat when this element is missing.

Take the intention statement mentioned above: “I intend to double my income while working with joy and ease.” That’s a solid place to start. Now, pave the way for action by packing your intention full of details. Include specific goals such as “I will call fifty new customers this week” and “I will include ten new products in my next catalog.”

Celebrate Growth

Use a journal to make your own growth visible to yourself. Record the results that you experience by using The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be and the Law of Attraction. Whenever a new outcome shows up in your life—whether subtle or significant—capture it in your journal.

Be specific. As your income increases, note dollar amounts. As your network of clients and job contacts grows, include names. As you resolve conflict with key people in your life, describe the words and actions that produced these breakthroughs.

Writing offers a way to lift your eyes above the steady march of daily events. When immersed in the details of work and family responsibilities, you can easily overlook change that is already manifesting in your life. Use a journal to regain perspective and literally rewrite your life.

Seeing the evidence of your personal growth recorded on the page, before your own eyes, can instantly raise your emotional vibration. And that opens a path for the cycle of inspiration, intention, action, and growth to begin all over again.

When life seems to be full of doubt and uncertainty we tend to look for a source of inspiration: what will happen in the future? What about my health, the children? What will happen if I make this decision and not that one? This is how the traditional tarot is often used, to satisfy a longing to know about the past and future. This Osho Zen Tarot focuses instead on gaining an understanding of the here and now. It is a system based on the wisdom of Zen, a wisdom that says events in the outer world simply reflect our own thoughts and feelings, even though we ourselves might be unclear about what those thoughts and feelings are. So it helps us to turn our attention away from outside events so we can find a new clarity of understanding in our innermost hearts. The conditions and states of mind portrayed by the contemporary images on the cards are all shown as being essentially transitional and transformative. The text in the accompanying cards helps to interpret and understand the images in the simple, straightforward and down to earth language of Zen.

“Fill your paper with the breathings of your heart.” ~William Wordsworth

If you are reading this blog, chances are you have embarked upon a spiritual path seeking to discover your authentic self and purpose in life. One powerful tool to help along the way is a spiritual journal. This post describes my definition of a spiritual journal; it is not the only way. Some keep a spiritual journal to record thoughts and inspirations as they read through religious scriptures.

“The act of putting pen to paper encourages pause for thought, this in turn makes us think more deeply about life, which helps us regain our equilibrium. ~Norbet Platt”

Why Keep a Spiritual Journal?

Keeping a spiritual journal allows you to see where you have been, where you are heading and also acts as a GPS of sorts. It is also a sacred place to recognize who you are. This type of journal also becomes the fertile soil where seeds of inspiration and intention are able to grow and manifest. Your journal is also a way to let the Universe know that you are paying attention to all the messages sent your way, it keeps the channel of communication open and flowing.

“Write down the thoughts of the moment. Those that come unsought for are commonly the most valuable.” ~Francis Bacon

How to Keep a Spiritual Journal.

A spiritual journal is very easy and fun to write in. For starters, you will want to find a blank journal or notebook, one that “feels right” and special to you. Some come with lined pages and some blank, the choice is yours. You might want to consider a journal with blank pages if you have an artistic streak waiting to show itself and wish to add drawings. Also find a writing instrument that you like, keeping in mind that pencil tends to fade after time.

Although your journal does not have to be written in every day, the more it is used, the more empowered it becomes. Your spiritual journal is not to be used as a place to “vent” emotions; it is vital to keep your entries positive and uplifting. If you wish to, keep a separate journal to record day-to-day feelings but do not read back what you have written in it. You do not want to add energy back into emotions that you have released.

“Journal writing is a voyage to the interior”~ Christina Baldwin

Make your time with your journal special. Consider setting aside a little time each evening before bed to write. Create sacred space; light a candle, allow yourself to be undisturbed and relax. Maybe keep a little notebook with you throughout the day to jot down ideas that you wish to enter into your journal; it’s easy to forget your thoughts during the day. A Moleskine notebook is perfect for this; they are study yet flexible to feel comfortable in a pocket.

What to Write in Your Spiritual Journal

You want to record anything that happens to cause you skin to get the goosebumps or those “Ah ha” moments. Anything that stands out from the ordinary and has meaning to you. Some suggestions are as follows:

inspirational and spiritual quotes

passages from books

dreams

synchronicities

intuitive messages

meditations

oracle or tarot card messages

intentions and goals

gratitude

A Valuable Tool

As you work with your journal, it becomes a road map to your life. Read it over periodically. Where have you been? What messages keep repeating themselves? Are you listening to your messages? What is manifesting from your intentions and goals?

If you encounter periods when there doesn’t appear to be much to write, are you being true to your authentic self? Have you stepped off your path? When we are in sync with the Universe and our heart’s desires, synchronicities and messages flow freely.

Just as the seasons have periods of growth and rest; so do we as humans. To all my readers: I needed time to sow, grow and now harvest. I will be back to writing again very soon.

Till that time here is a book suggestion. My friend and fellow blogger, Robin Easton of Naked in Eden, has been very busy and just released her book “Naked in Eden: My Adventure and Awakening in the Australian Rainforest“.

Writing this book has taught me many things. One of them being that we can live our dreams. As long as we take it one day at a time and keep going even in the face of setbacks and challenges, we will reach our goal. I believe that when we live our dreams, we change our lives, and hopefully the lives of those around us. Who knows, we might even change the world. I hope this wild adventurous story of my life in the Daintree Rainforest of Queensland, Australia will help us remember that we all are connected to a larger world than “the world of humans”. ~Robin Easton
